SURVEY

Gender

The majority of the twenty-five people surveyed were female. Specifically, 56% of the people in our survey were female while 44% were male.

Ethnicity

The majority of the twenty-five people surveyed were either Asian or African-American, making up a combined 56% of the group of people surveyed. 24% of the people surveyed were Hispanic, 16% were Caucasian, and 4% were mixed.

Student to Teacher Ratio

For every 22 students surveyed, 1 teacher was surveyed. Two of the people who took the survey were former students. We have separated the survey into two categories: one for the students and former students and one for the teacher.

Grade Level

Juniors made up the majority of people surveyed, with 44% them being high school juniors. Sophomores made up 24% of the people surveyed, college students made up 20% of the people surveyed, seniors made up 8% of the people surveyed, and freshman made up 4% of the people surveyed. Because junior year is often the hardest and most rigorous year for high school students, the students surveyed may have a a worse high school experience than the freshman and seniors.

Favorite Subjects

The majority of people surveyed found the natural sciences and sports to be their favorite school subjects, with six people claiming these to be their favorite subjects. Five people claimed that math was their favorite subject, four claimed that computer science was their favorite subject, four claimed that English was their favorite subject, four claimed that social science was their favorite subject, one claimed that PE was their favorite subject, one claimed that ROTC was their favorite subject, and two claimed that AP classes were their favorite.

Favorite Class

Despite most people voting STEM related subjects as their favorite high school subjects, a 20% majority of the people surveyed found history and politics to be their favorite class. I believe that this is due to the fact that, while many find STEM related subjects to be interesting, most American schools teach them in such boring and uninspired ways that they prefer history class despite having a greater interest in STEM than the humanities. 8% of the people surveyed said their favorite class was American Sign Language, another 8% said their favorite class was science, another 8% said their favorite class was NJROTC, 4% said their favorite class was art, another 4% said their favorite class was auto shop, another 4% said their favorite class was business, another 4% said their favorite class was ceramics, another 4% said their favorite class was ethnic studies, another 4% said their favorite class was graphic design, another 4% said their favorite class was PE, and 28% of the people surveyed claimed they had no favorite subject.

Careers You Want To Pursue

The majority of students surveyed want to pursue natural science and sports as their career, with 32% of students either wanting to pursue a career in natural science or sports. 8% of the students surveyed want to pursue social science as their career, another 8% want to pursue art, another 8% want to pursue technology, and another 8% want to pursue a career in therapy. Math, health, graphics, business, music, ethnic studies, military, criminology, and theater are the least popular career for the students surveyed; each of these careers are careers each pursued by only 4% of the people surveyed. Similar to the favorite subjects category, the majority of students chose STEM related careers rather than those in the humanities, which seems to be further evidence of my hypothesis in the Favorite Class section.

Students With Hands On Teachers

We asked students how hands-on their teachers were on a scale of 1 to 6 where a 1 was hands-off while a 6 was hands-on. The majority of students gave a 3 or 4, meaning that the majority of students surveyed either had teachers that had a teaching style that was neither hands-on or hands-off or  had a mix of teachers with hands-on and hands-off teaching styles.

Do You Like The US Education System?

A 56% majority of the people surveyed were fine with the US education system as it is. This doesn't imply that they don't see our education system as flawed, but it shows that most would be fine without any changes to our education system. 20% of the people surveyed were not happy with our education system and 24% were unsure.

Relations with Peers

We asked people to rank how well they get along with their classmates from a 1 to 8, with a 1 being amazing and an 8 being horrible. Thankfully, none of the people surveyed got along with their classmates horribly. 24% of the people surveyed gave a 1, another 24% gave a 2, 8% gave a 3, another 8% gave a 4, 16% gave a 5, another 16% gave a 6, and 4% gave a 7. So overall, the majority of students either get along with their peers very well or don't get along with their peers that much.
